Cancer treatments are intrusive and painful, yet they don’t always work. That’s why many people are turning to CBD oil as an alternative. Cannabidiol, or CBD oil, is becoming more renowned for its cancer fighting abilities, encouraging many to give it a try. Yet, few people really understand how it works.
A Brief Overview of How CBD Oil Fights Cancer
In the body, the spleen serves as home to the immune system and, as a threat is detected, receptor in the spleen, known as CB2 receptors, activate the immune system. In order for those CB2 receptors to know there’s a threat to the body, neurotransmitters from the brain must activate the receptors. The name of that neurotransmitter is anandamide and it’s what jumpstarts the body’s response to a threat, such as the development of cancer cells.
Similarly, cannabidiol also is capable of activating the CB2 receptors. In that way, CBD and anandamide are interchangeable, as they perform the same function. This is especially helpful, because some injuries and illnesses demand a larger response from the CB2 receptors than the anandamide can produce on its own. At this point, any CBD in the system will go to work to boost that response.
The CBD will work on the immune system for only as long as the threat is present. For instance, a sprained ankle may only last a few hours. After that situation has been resolved, the CBD will no longer work to activate the CB2 receptors. However, a long-term illness, like cancer, will stimulate the CBD for an extended period.
Recent studies have found that CBD oil also works on its own. In this instance, the CBD will actually travel the body in search of cancer cells to kill without the aid of the immune system. The CBD takes control of the lipoxygenase pathway in a cell to stop cancer tumor growth and kill the cell. Because of activities like cell growth inhibition and tumor regression, CBD will remain in the lab and in the limelight while they research more ways it can be used to directly treat cancer or the effects of cancer. Another impressive study is one showing how CBD inhibits the growth of breast tumor cell lines. These are amazing times we live in. Will we get to see the snuffing out of cancer and that the remedies have been in our backyards all along? It’s not that simple, I know, but it’s looking very promising.
The cannabidiol can engage in this process without causing the harmful side effects that result from other forms of cancer treatment. Additionally, this is the oil extracted from the hemp plant and, as such, doesn’t produce the same “high” feeling as smoking marijuana. Hemp is not marijuana. Together, these factors indicate that a cancer patient can take doses of CBD oil at anytime without having to worry about how it will affect them. They can administer the cannabidiol at work or before driving their car without having to worry about any harmful or intoxicating effects.
